Abstract

1523574 Anionic emulsifiers for emulsion polymerization KANSAI PAINT CO Ltd 8 March 1977 [9 March 1976] 9607/77 Heading C3P A copolymeric emulsifier is a neutralized copolymer of (A) a monomer prepared by reacting at least one glycidyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid with at least one drying oil and/or semi-drying oil fatty acid; (B) an alpha, beta ethylenic carboxylic acid and (C) an unsaturated monomer having an -COOH group and having a Q value of at least 0À1 as determined by Q-e theory. The invention also comprises an emulsion polymerization process in which any unsaturated monomer is polymerized in aqueous emulsion using the above copolymer as emulsifier. Preferred acids (B) are acrylic, methacrylic crotonic, fumaric, and also maleic anhydride. Preferred monomers (C) are styrene, vinyl toluene and acrylic or methacrylic esters.
