Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a bend-free, relatively thick, flexible metal band by a method wherein a concave surface is forrmed on a specified position of a cooling belt running between pulleys and a molten metal is jetted onto the concave surface to be quickly solidified.
CONSTITUTION: A high pressure argon gas is jetted from a nozzle 4 onto a specified position of an endless metal belt 3 which rotates in a high speed between pulleys 1 and 2 so that a concave surface 5 is formed in the lengthwise direction of the belt. Metal molten by means of a high-frequency induction furnace 6 is jetted from jet mouth 7 onto the convave surface 5. The molten metal is rapidly cooled on the concave surface 5 and formed into a thin metal band 8 because it is pressed by centrifugal force on the surface 5 to accelerate a rapid heat removal and argon gas effectively cools the metal. This results in a rapid cooling and therefore fine crystal grains, so that a thin band having a large flexibility is provided.
