Abstract

PURPOSE:To raise the high-rate-discharge performance of the negative plate of a lead storage battery without causing any decrease in the life of the battery by impregnating the surface of the plate, which is filled with a paste containing a usual addition agent, with a water solution of a given amount of lignin. CONSTITUTION:A lead powder is added with a usual addition agent which is composed of, for example, 0.3-2% of barium sulfate, 0.1-0.7% of lignin and 0.1- 0.5% of carbon, the mixture being kneaded to make a paste. The paste is filled in the grid of a plate, thus obtaining a negative plate. Following that, the negative plate is immersed in an acid, before the plate is either showered with or immersed in a water solution of 0.8-5% of lignin to cause the surface of the negative plate to be impregnated with lignin. With this constitution, the negative plate can provide an increased performance of high rate discharge at low temperatures as well as at ordinary temperatures without causing any decrease in the life of a battery.
