Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare and accumulate a specific secophenol in high concentration and yield from androsta-1,4-diene-3,17-dione(ADD), by culturing bacteria belonging to Rhodococcus genus in a medium containing ADD as a substrate.
CONSTITUTION: Bacteria belonging to Rhodococcus e.g. Rhodococcus equi, ATCC 21329) are inoculated in a sterilized medium containing a carbon source, a nitrogen source, inorganic salts, and nutrients suchas vitamins, and cultured under shaking or under agitation and aeration, usually at 20W40°C, especially at about 28W37°C, usually at pH 5W10, especially at pH 6W9. ADD is added to the medium thus obtained, and made to react to converte the ADD to 3-hydrxoy-9,10-secoandrosta- 1,3,5(10)- triene-9,17-dione (HSA) which is a secophenol. The HSA accumulated in the medium is separated by conventional process. The HSA has a structure suitable for the synthesis of vitamin D3 and steroid hormones.
