Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the title steroid useful as a raw material of hormones, economically, in high yield, by culturing bacteria belonging to Corynebacterium genus in a medium containing androst-4-ene-3,17-dione as a substrate.
CONSTITUTION: Bacteria belonging to Corynebacterium genus, e.g. Corynebacterium equi ATCC 21329, are cultured in a medium containing androst-4-ene- 3,17-dione (4AD), and the title steroid is separated from the medium. The 4AD can be prepared at low cost by culturing bacteria belonging to Mycobacterium genus, e.g Mycobacterium parafortuitum complex MIC-0807, in a nutrient medium containing various sterols such as cholesterol, stigmasterol, etc., or their oxidation intermediate.
