Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare pristanol from pristane, in high yield, by culturing microorganisms capable of oxidizing pristane in a medium containing pristane as main carbon source in the presence of a nonionic surface active agent.
CONSTITUTION: Microorganisms selected from yeasts, bacteria, and actinomycetes, belonging to Candida genus, Corynebacterium genus or Mycobacterium genus, and capable of oxidizing pristane, are cultured in a medium containing pristane as main carbon source in the presence of a nonionic surface active agent, and the produced pristanol is collected from the medium. The microorganisms are, e.g. Candida lipolytia IFO.0746, Corynebacterium equi IAM.1013, Mycobacterium smegmatis IFO.3038, etc. The nonionic surface active agent is, e.g. a sorbitan fatty acid ester, a polyoxyethylene fatty acid ester, etc.
