Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as a starting material for perfumes, by incubation of bacteria belonging to the well-known genus Gluconobacter, in a liquid medium comprising easily available 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol, and if desired, by its esterification.
CONSTITUTION: Bacteria, e.g. Gluconobacter.roseus, or IAM1841, belonging to the genus Gluconobacter and having the ability to oxidize 2-methylpropane-1,3-diol, are incubated under aerobic incubating conditions in a liquid medium comprishing 2- methylpropane-1,3-diol, and (R)-(-)-β-hydroxyisobutyric acid is collected from the culture and, if desired, esterified, to obtain the object compound of the formula (R' is H or alkyl). Preferably, mannitol or an enzyme extract may be cited as the medium, and the substrate concentration in the oxidation is in the range of 0.1W 0.5%.
