Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound as a raw material for plasticizers and heat- resistant plastics in high yield, by the continuous oxidation of pseudocumene at different reaction temperatures in the first and second series reactors of the continuous complete mixing type, in a limited catalyst concentration.
CONSTITUTION: Pseudocumene is oxidized with air in the liquid phase continuously in acetic acid, in the presence of Co, Mn and Br as a catalyst, whose total concentration is 0.05W0.5wt% based on the acetic acid, at 110W170°C, especially at 120W 150°C, in the first reactor and at 180W240°C, particularly 195W225°C, in the second reactor of the continuous complete mixing type to obtain trimellitic acid. The temperature difference between the two reactors is preferably 50°C or more.
EFFECT: The ready recovery and reuse of the catalyst, and a stable and continuous operation.
