Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain α-isopropylmalic acid of high purity in high yield, by adding Ca(OH)2 etc. to a fermentation liquor of α-isopropylmalic acid, and separating the formed precipitate.
CONSTITUTION: Ca(OH)2 or a water-soluble Ca salt, e.g. CaCl2 or CaBr2, in an amount of about equimolar or 5 times that of α-isopropylmalic acid is added to a fermentation liquor of α-isopropylmalic acid or an intermediate process liquor from which the α-isopropylmalic acid is separated, and the mixture is concentrated or cooled top recipitate and separate Ca salt of the α-isopropylmalic acid. The mother liquor after the separation of the Ca salt is concentrated to crystallize the remaining Ca salt. The Ca salt is then suspended in water, and sulfuric acid is added to adjust the pH of the suspension to 2.5±0.5. The Ca salt is dissolved in the suspension and passed through a cation exchange resin column to remove the cation. The breakthrough liquid thus obtained is then concentrated to deposit the α-isopropylmalic acid.
