Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate an α-amino acid in high yield from an iminodicarboxylic acid, by adding sulfuric acid to an aqueous α-amino acid solution containing the iminodicarboxylic acid in the presence of a sodium salt to attain a strongly acidic condition (pH ≤1.5).
CONSTITUTION: An iminodicarboxylic acid component is crystallized and separated from an aqueous α-amino acid solution containing the α-amino acid (e.g. glycine) or its salt and the iminodicarboxylic acid (e.g. iminodiacetic acid) or its salt, by adding sulfuric acid to the solution in the presence of a sodium salt of attain a strongly acidic condition (pH ≤1.5, preferably 0.4W1.2); thereafter the crystals are dissolved in water, and adjusted to pH 2.4±0.5 to recover the iminodicarboxylic acid.
EFFECT: An α-amino acid can be efficiently obtained substantially without renewal of the mother liquor.
