Abstract
PURPOSE:To easily manufacture a glass fiber for optical transmission with a small transmission loss by introducing chlorine gas or a gaseous chlorine compound into a multiple quartz crucible, heat treating the crucible, filling glass rods, and melt spinning the rods into a fiber. CONSTITUTION:Prior to introducing a core forming glass rod and a clad forming glass rod into a quartz crucible for spinning, the whole crucible is heated with heating furnaces 5A, 5B. When the heating temp. reaches about 1,400-1,450 deg.C, chlorine gas or thionyl chloride is introduced from core glass rod introduction hole 14 and clad glass rod introduction hole 15, and heat treatment is carried out for about 1hr. Thus, hydroxyl groups contained in the crucible are diffused, leach out of the inner surface, react with Cl2 or SOCl2, forming HCl, S02 and 02, which are removed. The glass rods are then introduced into the crucible thus heat treated, and a high quality glass fiber for optical transmission is obtd. by spinning.
