Abstract
PURPOSE:To enable production of a preform capable of obtaining a single mode optical fiber having low loss, by heating a core rod in a rod-in tube method in a chlorine based gas atmosphere prior to drawing the core rod. CONSTITUTION:A glass rod for core is inserted into the hollow part of a clad material having lower refraction index than the glass rod for core and the glass rod is heated in the inserted state and gap between the both is filled to produce the aimed preform for optical fiber. In the method, the glass rod 1 for core is fixed through an upper dummy rod 2 to a rotating mechanism 3 and retained in an oven center tube 5 of a heat oven 4. Then the glass rod is heated in a chlorine based gas atmosphere introduced from an introducing part 6 by the oven 4. OH group and impurity existing in the surface layer of the rod 1 is removed by the above-mentioned treatment. Then a glass rod 7 already treated is heated to a prescribed temperature in other high-temperature heat oven 9, drawn to a core rod 11 having desired fine diameter with a drawing and rotating mechanism 10 and the drawn rod is inserted into the hollow part of the clad material.
