Abstract

PURPOSE:To prepare an optical fiber having excellent smoothness and high mechanical strength, by carrying out melt spinning in a space having adequate temperature distribution generated by a heater having a size corresponding to the size of a preform rod or the size of a pipe covering said preform rod, without using a heat- shielding material. CONSTITUTION:A porous glass soot rod is doped with a dopant for controlling the characteristics of the glass, such as refractive index, softening point, etc., to a predetermined concentration distribution, and sintered to obtain a transparent preform rod. The rod is molten and spun directly, or as a rod-in-tube by inserting into a tube of borosilicate glass or aluminosilicate glass. In the above melt-spinning process, a heater 21 having a radius larger than that of the preform 23 by 2-6mm. and a length of 1.5-3.5 times the radius of the preform 23, and devoid of heat- sheilding material, is placed in a capsule 22 filled with N2. The device produces a fiber having excellent smoothness and high mechanical strength, prevents the excessive heating at the inner side of the glass rod and the generation of bubbles in the rod, reduces the structural defects of the fiber, and gives an optical fiber having low transmission loss.
