Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove impurities in molten metal effectively in a short time by blowing an inert gas into a molten steel containing such impurities as Pb, Zn, Bi, Te, etc., at a specific flow rate.
CONSTITUTION: In the refining container 1 provided with three electrodes 4, the tuyere 5, the porous plug 6, and the sliding nozzle 7, the molten steel 2 containing Pb, Zn, Bi, Te, etc., as impurities is put, and the molten steel 2 is heated by arc from three electrodes 4 and at the same time an inert gas is blown from the porous plug 6 into the container for heat refining. Then, the tuyere 5 is turned below the level of the molten metal 2 by tilting the container 1 and then an inert gas, e.g., Ar, N2 etc., together with a slag-forming agent and an alloy additive as needed, is blown into the tuyere 5 as a blowing rate of 200W700 N liter/minute/ton. Thus, impurities, e.g., Pb, Bi, Zn, Te, etc., in the molten steel can be removed to traces in a very short time.
