PURPOSE:To protect the magnetic head from damage due to friction, by selectively etching the opposing surfaces of recording medium of thin film magnetic head of the magnetic disc performing contact start-stop through the use of a mask and coating the antiwear thin film. CONSTITUTION:The metal mask 1 is covered on the slider 4 of the magnetic disc performing contact start-stop, only the multihead chip floating surface 7 is externally exposed from the exposing window 2 of the metal mask 1 with etching or sputtering processing. The amount to be removed by etching is dependent on the amount of floating of the magnetic head, but the amount is suitably 0.05-0.2mum normally. Next, by coating the antiwear thin film such as Cr on the etching surface, the thin film magnetic head can be protected from damage due to friction produced in contact start-stop.
