Abstract

PURPOSE: To detect a fixed character position automatically and accurately at a high speed by detecting alternate short black and white picture signals appearing at a scan output several times, by scanning one row or column.
CONSTITUTION: Scanner 1 scans the entire surface of a document and regarding a black picture element as "1" and a white picture element "0" stores the scan output in memory unit 2 as a binary quantized picture signal. This memory signal is converted, row by row or column by column, into a binary-coded signal that corresponds to respective picture elements from a fixed position and the binary coded signal is sent to shift register 3 successively. On the other hand, counters 8 and 9 count mesh widths of the black and white parts of register 4 and counter 10 checks how many times alternate black and white picture elements of fixed width appear and, when the obtained frequency is a fixed value, outputs character confirmation signal LET from AND gate 11. Counter 15 counts the number of times of shifts of register 3 and counter 16 writes the contents of counter 15 in memory 17 when signal LET is generated. Therefore, the character position can be determined by contents of counter 16 and memory 17 and the one-row one-column position of register 3.
