Abstract

PURPOSE: To make the yield of molding higher by obtaining the margin for expansion of mold walls from the rate of shrinkage and the amount of shrinkage of the ingot width when the pouring speed drops thereby expanding the widt between the mold walls so at to conform to the margin for expansion, in performing continuous casting with a variable width mold.
CONSTITUTION: If the apparent rate of width shrinkage of an ingot 1 when the pouring speed at the final period of casting using a variable width mold drops is expressed by αt=(Lt-L)/Lt, the amount of width shrinkage is ΔL=(Lt-L). Hence, the margin for expansion of the short side walls of the mold in the each ingot position when the pouring speed drops is dΔL/ t. The short side walls of the mold are widened with lapse of time to allow for shrinkage so as to conform to the margin for expansion dΔL/αt from the ingot position 0 when the pouring speed drops, whereby the width of the ingot 1 is expanded.
