Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance useful as a mixing base for perfumes, by the electrolytic reaction of a THF or γ-lactone having a 3-methyl-2-butenyl group at the 2-position with an organic selenating agent in an organic solvent, and decomposing the resultant intermediate under heating, etc.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I (R1 is H or CH3; X is two H or O) is subjected to the electrolytic reaction with diphenyl diselenide in a lower alcohol, lower fatty acid or hydrous organic solvent, e.g. hydrous acetonitrile or DMF, in the presence of a (quaternary) ammonium halide to give an intermediate of formula II (R2 is H, 1W4C alkyl or 1W3C acyl), which is then decomposed at 100W250°C under heating or reacted with methanesulfonyl chloride in the presence of an amine to affod a compound of formula III. The electrolytic reaction is carried out with or without separating the anode and the cathode with diaphragms, and platinum, stainless steel, Ni, C, etc. may be used as the electrodes.
