(I) is obtd. by electrolysis using an electrochemical apparatus contg. >=1 electrolysis cell contg. an electrolytic soln. which contains a salt A+R1R2R3R4.B- (where B- is a counter-ion dissolved in an aprotic polar solvent. An anode and a cathode are immersed in the electrolytic soln. the cathode contg. graphitic C. (I) is used partic. as a chemical reducing agent in heterogeneous phase, e.g. to replace amalgams based on Hg with their inherent pollution risk.
