(I) contains organic C associated with which is a material of general formula Ar1R2R3R4, where the central atom A is N, S or P (when A is S, there are only 3 substits. of A); R1-4 each being a satd. aliphatic chain. (I) is obtd. by electrolysis using an electrochemical apparatus contg. >=1 electrolysis cell contg. an electrolytic soln. which contains a salt A+R1R2R3R4.B- (where B- is a counter-ion dissolved in an aprotic polar solvent. An anode and a cathode are immersed in the electrolytic soln. the cathode contg. graphitic C. (I) is used partic. as a chemical reducing agent in heterogeneous phase, e.g. to replace amalgams based on Hg with their inherent pollution risk.
