Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent generation of a broadside folding defect and generation of crop ends, and to improve the yield of finishing work, by roughly rolling a slab in a dog bone shape through several passes, by giving a heavy rolling reduction to the slab while forcibly cooling its surface, and by applying an ordinary rolling work to this slab.
CONSTITUTION: The cross section of a slab is formed into a dog bone shape satisfying following conditions; H=1.02HoW1.07Ho, b=0.03BW0.09B, and C=50W 150mm. This slab is then fed to a roughing mill in a thick plate rolling line and is formed into a slab of a rectangular section through several passes. While the surface of this slab is forcibly cooled in a short time, several passes with a heavy draft percentage are applied to the slab whose front and back surfaces are hereby covered with hard and thin hulls. Thereafter, an ordinary rolling work is applied to this slab; hereupon, any broadside folding defects do not generate, and both longitudinal ends are not formed into a crop shape. As a result, the amount of defectively shaped part is greatly diminished.
