Abstract
PURPOSE:To stabilize the contact between a separtor and a positive mixture, by using as a separator a grafted polyethylene film which shrinks from its periphery. CONSTITUTION:A positive mixture 2 made of silver oxide is packed into a metal case 1 also serving as a positive terminal. A separator 3, an electrolyte holding terminal 4, and a gel-like negative agent 5 made of zinc powder are placed over the positive mixture 2, in that order. After that, a metal sealing plate 7 also serving as a negative terminal is placed on the negative agent 5, with an insulating gasket 6 interposed between the case 1 and the plate 7, to seal the battery, thus an alkaline battery being constituted. The separator 3 is made of a polyethylene film prepared by subjecting acrylic acid or methacrylic acid to graft-polymerization. The separator 3 is formed so that it shrinks from its periphery when immersed in an alkaline electrolyte. The shrinkage rate of the separator 3 is preferably below 15%.
