Abstract

PURPOSE: To reform highly hydroscopic coal to produce coal having low hygroscopicity and to increase calorific value per unit weight, by a method wherein the highly hydroscopic coal having a low carbon content and a high equilibrium moisture value is rapidly heated with a high-temperature gas contg. steam, and then quenched.
CONSTITUTION: Hightly hygroslopic coal having a low carbon content (on a dry ash-free basis) of 30% or lower and a high equilibrium moisture value of 5wt% or higher, is heated rapidly to a final heating temp. of 300W500°C at a heating rate of at least 100°C/min. by using a high-temperature gas contg. at least 20vol% steam, and then quenched to 250°C or lower at a cooling rate of at least 50°C/min. Hygroscopicity can be lowered by utilizing the heat decomposition action of coal without causing the destruction of the particle diameter of coal.
