Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate and purify a dicarboxylic acid with a good hue containing small amounts of impurities, by extracting the dicarboxylic acid with an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent, and bringing the extract into contact with a small amount of a treating liquid, e.g. a solvent which is soluble in water and insoluble in the aromatic hydrocarbon.
CONSTITUTION: A fungus body is removed from a fermentation liquid, and an inorganic acid is added to adjust the pH of the liquid to 4.0 or lower. The free dicarboxylic acid is deposited, and the liquid is brought into contact with an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent at 60W100°C to extract the dicarboxylic acid preferentially in the aromatic hydrocarbon phase. The extract is then brought into contact with a small amount of a treating liquid consisting of a solvent which is soluble in water and substantially insoluble in the aromatic hydrocarbon or an aqueous solution thereof at 60W100°C to shift impurities to the treating liquid phase. The extract is concentrated and cooled to crystallize and recover the dicarboxylic acid. Ethylene glycol, glycerol, 1,3-propanediol, etc. may be cited as the solvent which is soluble in water and substantially insoluble in the aromatic hydrocarbon.
