Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce the resistance of an alkaline battery, and increase the current efficiency and the cycle life of the battery by using an electrolyte-holding body made of a porous body, which is impregnated with a given amounts of a nonionic surface active agent and a hygroscopic substance. CONSTITUTION:A columnar electrode body, which is constituted by interposing both a separator 3 and an electrolyte-holding body 4 between a zinc electrode 1 and a nickel electrode 2 before these four are coiled into a spiral form, is placed in a cylindrical can 5 which also serves as a negative terminal, thus an alkaline battery being constituted. The electrolyte-holding body 4 is prepared by making 1g of a porous alkali-proof body such as nonwoven polyamide cloth to be impregnated with both 0.001-0.03g of a nonionic surface active agent, and 0.001-0.3g of hygroscopic substance, such as an oxide or a hydroxide of either an organic matter such as polyvinyl alcohol or an inorganic matter such as Ti or Ca.
