Abstract

PURPOSE:To detect even a fault of size equivalent to a low-intensity area sufficiently by detecting light scattered due to a fault and emitted outward and by measuring the intensity of the scattered light. CONSTITUTION:A couple of integral balls 4 and 4' having the same characteristics are located under heater 2 and wire-drawn optical fiber 3 runs through them. Light emitted from the heating area of base material 1 passes through optical fiber 3 and is detected by photodetectors 5 and 5'. Outputs of detectors 5 and 5' are supplied to differential amplifier 7 via amplifiers 6 and 6' to amplify the difference in light intensity between the detection outputs and the difference is supplied to and recorded on recorder 8. Thus, only the intensity of scattered light due to a fault is detected and the size of the fault is made to correspond to the intensity of the scattered light, thereby finding the size of the fault from the intensity of scattered light.
