Abstract

PURPOSE: To dissolve radioactive elements contained in alumina in a mineral acid and to remove them from the alumina, by dipping the alumina in a diluted aqueous solution of the mineral acid.
CONSTITUTION: Since a very small amount of radioactive elements, e.g., uranium, thorium, etc. exists in alumina prepared by Bayer's process using bauxite as a raw material, it can not be used as a package for semiconductor memory, etc. The alumina is added to 0.2W0.5N diluted solution of a mineral acid, e.g., nitric acid, sulfuric acid, etc. and stirred for 0.5W1hr. The radioactive elements, e.g., uranium, thorium, etc. contained in the alumina are eluted in the solution of the mineral acid. The alumina is taken out from the aqueous solution of the mineral acid and washed, to give alumina with a small content of uranium and thorium.
