Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable easily the preparation of alumina having extremely low content of radioactive elements, by blending alumina with aluminum fluoride, boric acid and silicic acid, followed by calcination.
CONSTITUTION: Since a very small amount of radioactive elements, e.g., uranium, thorium, etc. exists in alumina prepared by Bayer's process using bauxite as a raw material, it can not be used as a package for semiconductor memory, etc. 0.2W 7wt% calculated as SiO2 of silicic acid-containing substance, e.g., chamotte, etc. and 0.25W1.0wt% aluminum fluoride or boric acid or both are added to the alumna, which is calcined at 1,350W1,450°C, and the additive, e.g., chamotte, etc. is separated and removed from the alumina. The radioactive elements, e.g., uranium, thorium, etc. are adsorbed on the silicic acid and fixed so that their content in the alumina is extremely reduced.
