Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the oxidation that generates from the defective part of the cut end face of an ingot which is cut on the exit side of a continuous casting machine simply and easily by coating said defective part by build-up welding prior to charging the ingot into a heating furnace.
CONSTITUTION: Build-up welding is applied to the defective part of center porosities, cracks, flaws, etc. produced on the cut end face of an ingot which is continuously cast and is cut to a prescribed length. This welding is executed either while the ingot is hot or cold and by an arc welding or other method. Although it is desirable that the welding electrode and welding core wire are of the same component types as those of the ingot which is base metal, those for ordinary carbon steel welding are also sufficient.
