Abstract
PURPOSE:To decrease Joule losses of a superconductive wire and suppress the evaporation of liquid helium by flowing electric current intermittently to the superconductive wire. CONSTITUTION:Both ends of a superconductive wire 1 are connected via a switch 6 to both poles of a DC power source 4. The switch 6 intermittently flows electric current to the wire 1. A holding circuit 7 is connected to both ends of the wire 1, and the circuit 7 is connected to a voltmeter 5. While no current is being flowed to the wire 1, the circuit 7 holds the output voltage across the voltage terminal when the current had been flowed to the wire 1. If the opening and closing of the switch 6 are performed at a ratio of 9 to 1, the Joule loss in the part of the nonimmersed part l2 of the wire 1 is decreased to 1/10.
