Abstract

PURPOSE:To accurately form the gap part of a titled head by forming a nonmagnetic layer on the surface of the thin film coil formed on a substrate then forming a thin-film magnetic core around the thin-film coil, and making the nonmagnetic layer as the gap part for the thin-film magnetic core. CONSTITUTION:A lower magnetic layer 2 and a thin-film coil layer 3 are formed on a substarate 1, an a filler substrate 9 which is an insulation layer is laminated thereon. A resist film 8 and a photomask 7 for forming nonmagnetic layer are formed on this substrate 9. Next, nonmagnetic layers 10, 11 are formed on the mask 7 and the substrate 9, after which the mask 7, the resist film 8 and the nonmagnetic layer 11 are removed and an acccurate gap part size is formed in the opening part of the mask 7. Thence, an upper magnetic layer 10 is formed on the layer part of the coil 3 and the nonmagnetic layer 10, after which the entire part is covered with a glass layer 12 and is polished, whereby the thin-film magnetic head in which the laminate and magnetic layer 4 of the coil 3 are enclosed by the glass layer 12 and the end part of the magnetic layer 4 is exposed on the side nearer the gap 5 than the boundary line 12' of the glass layer 13 and the magnetic layer 4 is obtained.
