Abstract
PURPOSE:To produce the spherical expanded slag having low surface porosity effectively and safely by a method wherein molten blast furnace slag is caused to flow into a curved gutter placed in a water tank and is forcibly scattered through an opening of the trough while injecting water into the gutter through holes provided in the gutter. CONSTITUTION:The blast furnace slag is caused to flow from a hopper 2 into the vertical curved gutter 7 placed in the water tank 11 while adjusting the flow rate, flow velocity and flow shape of the slag in a predetermined manner by an outflow rate regulating damper 4, a horizontal gutter 5 and a flow rate (thickness) regulating plate 6. The molten slag flowing into the gutter 7 flows down while receiving a predetermined amount of water injected through the inflow holes 8 provided in the gutter 7 at regular spacings, and the slag reaches the opening 10 at the lower part of the gutter 7 with the minimum heat content for remaining in the molten state. The slag is then scattered into the air as particles by a centrifugal blower 14 provided storing place while being spherically shaped by surface tension and being solidified. The spherical expanded slag obtained by the method is utilized effectively as lightweight aggregate or the like.
