Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a diol in high yield, by the oxo reaction of a specific hydrocarbon, etc., in a specific solvent in the presence of a cobalt compound and a phosphine as a catalyst, and further the separation of the solvent phase from the reaction mixture through cooling for recycling.
CONSTITUTION: A compound having an intramolecular quaternary or bridge head carbon and a double bond on one side and a double bond, a formly or hydroxyl group on the other side across said carbon, except dicyclopentadiene, is subjected to the oxo reaction in a saturated and/or aromatic hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of a cobalt compound and a phosphine as a catalyst. The resultant reaction mixture is then cooled and separated into a solvent phase containing the catalyst and a diol phase as a reaction product. Thus, the solvent and the catalyst are separated in one step. The solvent phase is recycled to the oxo reaction system, and the aimed diol is obtained in high yield.
