Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the active material of a nonmaintenance type lead battery from falling off, and thereby increase the life of the battery by laminating a mat made of thin glass fibers having a mean fiber diameter of below a given value and a mat made of thick glass fibers having a larger fiber diameter, and by placing the thin glass fiber mat so that it touches the positive plate. CONSTITUTION:A mat made of thin glass fibers and a mat made of thick glass fibers are laminated, a laminated mat consisting of 2-3 layers being constituted. The thin glass fibers principally comprise glass fibers having a mean fiber diameter of below 5mu. The mat made of the thin glass fibers closely touches the positive plate of a battery. For instance, 90 parts of glass fibers having a mean diameter of 0.8mu and 10 parts of glass fibers having a mean diameter of 10mu are mixed and subjected to a wet process of making paper to prepare a thin glass fiber mat of 0.3mm. thickness, while a thick glass fiber mat of 1.1mm. thickness is prepared from glass fibers having a mean fiber diameter of 30mu through a dry process of making paper. following that, these two kinds of mats are laminated, thus a laminated mat being formed.
