Abstract

1397683 Laminates OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORP 6 March 1973 [6 March 1972 9 Feb 1973] 10857/73 Heading B5N [Also in Division B2] A moulded panel or tile having a threedimensional contoured front surface, comprises a densified mass of heterogeneously arranged and spaced fibres bonded to one another by a binder, the heterogenous arrangement of the fibres including mostly fibres disposed generally parallel to the front surface of the panel or tile, but also including fibres extending angularly to the front surface, and is characterized in having a sheet comprising non-woven fibrous material over said front surface of the panel or tile and conforming to the front contour thereof, said sheet bridging over spaces among the fibres of the panel or tile adjacent the front surface and masking non-uniformity of the panel or tile. The product of the invention may be made by forming a deformable layer of fibres held together by an uncured binder, said layer having two major spaced surfaces, most of the fibres being disposed generally parallel to one major surface of the panel or tile but some extending angularly to the said one major surface, positioning a sheet comprising non-woven fibrous material over said one major surface of said layer, placing the layer and the sheet between two mould halves, one of said mould halves being contoured to form a front face of the panel or tile, and said non-woven sheet being on the side of the fibrous layer next to said contoured mould half, moving said mould halves together to compress said fibrous material, applying heat to sure the binder on said fibrous layer, separating the mould halves and removing the product therefrom. A finished surface may be provided on the product by using a fibrous sheet impregnated with a plastics material, by interposing a layer of plastics material between the sheet and the layer or by using a composite material comprising the sheet and a layer of plastics. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 a non-woven sheet 30 from roll 32 is fed on to the upper span of belt 22 and fibres 18, e.g. of glass with a binder applied thereto deposited on the sheet in vacuum chamber 26 to form a composite material which is compressed between conveyers 36 and 38 to form a product for moulding. The non-woven fibrous sheet may comprise rayon fibres bonded by an acrylic binder.
