Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a fine display by overcoating the surface of each electrode plate of a liq. crystal element with a polyimide film and subjecting the film to vertical orientation by treating with a hydrocarbon alkoxysilylammnoium salt to prevent the electrode part from being made prominent. CONSTITUTION:The surface of an electrode plate having a patterned electrode is coated with polyimide varnish, dried, and heat treated to form a polyimide film. An alcoholic soln. of a hydrocarbon alkoxysilylammonium salt such as octadecyldimethyl[3-(trimethoxysilyl)-propyl]ammoniumchloride is then applied to the film and cured. Such electrode plates are superposed and sealed, and a cholesteric- nematic phase transition type liq. crystal or the like is sealed up into the space between the plates. Thus, the plates are prevented from being made prominent owing to the refractive index difference between the plates and substrate glass, they are well joined to the vertically orienting agent, and a stable display device with high visual recognizability is obtd.
