Abstract

PURPOSE:To decrease the central segregation of an ingot by specifying the Ca concn. in the steel and ingot drawing speed in a Ca addition method. CONSTITUTION:When the Ca concn. (ppm) in steel and the drawing speed (m/ min) of an ingot are defined as y, x, this method is so arranged as to satisfy the formula. If the lower limit of y is below this value, the degree of the central segregation of C, S remains at below 1/2 that when Ca is not added and there is virtually no effect of Ca addition. When the upper limit of y exceeds this value, the decrease in the segregation owing to Ca addition reaches a threshold, and this results in increased cost, production of a large amount of Ca-base inclusions and possible degradation of the ingot quality. Further, below this value in the lower limit of x, the productivity drops considerably. When the upper limit is over this value, the molten steel pool in a mold grows long and iron static pressure increases, thereby resulting in increase bulging of the ingot between rolls, promoted central segregation and lost stabilization effect by Ca addition.
