Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce a polyvinyl ester saponificate freed from heat discoloration and evolution of decomposition odors, by employing an aliphatic carboxylic acid salt of a specific metal as the saponification catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: As the saponification catalyst there is used at least one aliphatic carboxylic acid salt of Ca, Zn, Mn, Mg, Co or Fe (an acetate is preferred and, particularly, zinc acetate is preferred). To a lower-alcoholic solution of a polyvinyl ester such as polyvinyl acetate is added about 0.1W10wt%, based on polyvinyl ester, above saponification catalyst, and the mixture is heated to about its reflux temperature. According to the above process, it is easy to produce saponificates of a low saponification degree. The low saponificates thus produced (saponification degree about 5W50mol%) are useful for the production of adhesives, paints, primers, etc.
