Abstract

PURPOSE:To improve the reliability of the calibration by using a sample pipe the same in the dimensions and the shape as the pipe under production previoulsy placed outside the line and having the sample pipe moving as the pipe under production does. CONSTITUTION:Placed on a pipe 6 under production, an ultrasonic flaw detector is so adjusted for a tip contactor 9 to act along the seam angle of a spiral pipe and then fixed. Thereafter, it is lifted with a lift cylinder 2 until the tip contactor 9 sufficiently clears the pipe 6 under production. After the unclamping of a transversing truck 5, the ultrasonic flaw detector 1 moves onto the sample pipe 7 and subsequently, lowers until the tip contactor 9 gets into contact with the sample pipe 7. At this point, as the seam of the sample pipe 7 coincides the seam of the pipe 6 in the position, the tip contactor 9 acts along the seam of the sample pipe 7 thereby ensuring an accurate calibration.
