Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the precision of detection of the dimensions of a flaw by controlling the position of the focus of ultrasonic beams in conformity with the position of the inside flaw of a detected material.
CONSTITUTION: The sequence of selection of ultrasonic vibrators 2 is set beforehand in a signal controller 6 by programming. By shifting these vibrators one by one in such a manner, for instance, that vibrators 2(2)W2(i+1) are selected after vibrators 2(1)W2(i), a signal for setting the indication position of a reflected wave in conformity with a new detecting range is given to a record indicator 7. Thus, the position of a reflected echo is indicated in a fixed position on the record indicator 7 according to the signal 21 for setting the indication position. Therefore, by performing the above inspection for detecting flaws repeatedly for all the vibrators 2(1)W2(n), the shape, dimensions, etc. of the inside flaws in the detected material can be detected more precisely and thus the precision of detection can be improved.
