Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a coating layer with a catalytic activity to oxidation reaction, by applying onto a surface to be coated a paint containing an alkali-treated catalyst and a phosphate, and then curing the phosphate with heat. CONSTITUTION:A paint, which contains a phosphate and an alkali-treated catalyst such as metal oxide or its complex oxide (e.g. manganese oxide, nickel, iron oxide), is applied onto a surface to be coated. The phosphate is then thermally cured. An alkali salt for use in the alkali treatment is selected from the group consisting of Na2CO3, NaHCO3, K2CO3, KHCO3, NaOH and KOH. The phosphate is a compound represented by the formula of MO.xP2O5.yH2O, wherein x and y are real numbers, and M is an element selected from Al, Mg, Ca, Cu, Ba, Ti, Mn and Zn. The curing temperature is preferably 200-500 deg.C.
