Abstract

PURPOSE: To form an indefectible penetration bead without oxidation of the weld base metal, by using a grooved graphite plate as the backing material and by flowing inert gas, when thick plates of copper or copper alloy are welded to each other.
CONSTITUTION: When thick plates 1 and 2 of copper or copper alloy are welded to each other, a V groove is formed on weld end faces, and root end faces are matched to each other and are fixed. Then, the air hole of graphite backing material 3 is matched to the gap between roots of welding base metals, and further, the groove of device 4 which flows inert gas is fixed to the air hole of backing material 3. Before welding, inert gas such as Ar is flowed into the groove of device 4 and is caused to reach the groove faces of welding base metals 1 and 2 through the air hole of backing material 3. At this time, welding torch 6 is driven to start welding. Since gaseous Ar covers the whole of the groove, the groove part is prevented from being oxidized, and indefectible penetration bead 7 is formed.
