Abstract

PURPOSE:To decice the grain quality of unpolished rice automatically by irradiating visible light to the unpolished rice and measuring the quantities of the light transmitted therethrough and the light reflected therefrom. CONSTITUTION:Unpolished rice is fed, grain by grain, to an optical measuring part under controlling by a microcomputer. In the optical measuring part, the reflected light R and transmitted light T1, T2 with respect to incident light I are measured. In general, body cracking occurs in the back belly part of the unpoiished rice, and since this results in decreased T2, the body cracking is decided if the ratio between T2 and T1 is calculated. Since the unpolished rice differs in its transmittance and reflectance depending upon kinds, areas of production, etc., measurement is made with 20 grains, and the average values with the upper 8 grains are obtained, whereby the decision level is set. Based on the level made in this way, the decision of sized grains (A), milky white grains (B), blue rice (C), brown rice (D) and dead rice (E) is made from the results of the optical measurements.
