Abstract
PURPOSE: To improve the rate of reaction and the space time yield in the preparation of a malonic acid dialkyl ester by the reaction of a monohalogenoacetic acid ester with CO and a lower aliphatic alcohol, by adding H2 gas to the reaction gas, and recycling the gas.
CONSTITUTION: A malonic acid dialkyl ester is prepared by reacting a monohalogenoacetic acid alkyl ester with CO and a lower aliphatic alcohol in the presence of a cobalt carbonyl catalyst and a basic substance (e.g. an alkali metal carbonate). In the above process, the reaction is carried out by adding 10W70% of hydrogen gas to the reaction gas, and purging a part of the gas after reaction while recycling the remaining gas to the inlet of the reactor. Since the process is simple and uses water gas available at a relatively low cost, as a raw material, it is extremely economical.
