Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover the titled substance simply and economically, by cultivating Alcaligens feacalis, heat-treating the resultant culture fluid under alkaline conditions, filtering the fluid, and adding a water-soluble solvent to the filtrate.
CONSTITUTION: Bacteria of Alcaligenes feacalis are cultivated in a liquid culture medium containing a carbon source, a nitrogen source, etc., and sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide is added to the resultant culture fluid and heat-treated under alkaline conditions. For separating and recovering a polysaccharide, the culture fluid after the heat treatment is filtered, and a water-soluble organic solvent, e.g. methanol, ethanol or acetone, is added to the filtrate to precipitate and recover the polysaccharide.
