Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable the recovery of the kinetic energy of exhaust gas, which is abandoned to the outside, to reduce fuel consumption, by providing each cylinder with a resonant volume section into which the exhaust gas is introduced and with a resonant pipe which communicates wth the atmosphere, a muffler or the like.
CONSTITUTION: In embodying a three-cylinder engine comprising three cylinders 1aW1c with equal ignition intervals of 240° in crankshaft angle, a resonant volume section 4 is provided so that exhaust gas is conducted thereto from the exhaust valves 3aW3c of the cylinders 1aW1c. The internal capacity VR of the volume section 4 is set as 0.4≤VR/VH≤3.5 where VH shows the stroke volume of one cylinder. Supposing that the opening time of the exhaust valves 3aW3c is shown by the crankshaft angle θEVO before the bottom dead center, the opening time is set as 145-5.6(VR/VH)≥θEVO≥90-5.6(VR/VH). The resonant volume section 4 is connected to a silencing volume section 6 through a resonant pipe 5 of predetermined length.
