Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a novel very stable blue pigment with low toxicity, by adding copper to barium silicate (composition), and forming a solid solution.
CONSTITUTION: Quartzite is ground with barium carbonate thoroughly, and a mineralizer is added thereto. The resultant mixture is then calcined in a furnace at 1,000°C to prepare barium silicate. The barium silicate is then mixed with a copper compound, e.g. CuO, and a reducing agent, and reacted to reduce the CuO to Cu2O under heating at 900W1,050°C. The resultant Cu2O is changed into a solid solution with the barium silicate to give the aimed blue pigment.
