Abstract
PURPOSE: To eliminate the delay of generating precipitations which would be derived from the decrease of a precipitation speed caused by air bubbles, and to offer an appropriate SV index, by using a defoaming type SV meter equipped with a mechanism for destroying the air bubbles with a compressed air or a reduced pressure.
CONSTITUTION: A sludge slurry is carried from a conduit 2 into a measuring vessel 1 at such a rate to flow over a pipe 3, by closing valves V3, V4 and opening valves V1, V2. The valves V1, V2 are closed and the valve V3 only is kept open, to introduce a compressed air (e.g. 3kg/cm2) from a compressed air pipe 4 into the measuring vessel 1 and to maintain the high pressure therein. After this high pressure state is maintained 30min., an ultrasonic type boundary meter 5 is operated to measure a distance to the surface of generated sludge precipitations. An SV index is computed on the basis of this distance. The ultrasonic type boundary meter 5 used in the example may be applicable in such a manner that, during the leaving period at rest under the high pressure after sampling, the sludge slurry is affected with ultrasonic vibrations to increase the contact frequency of the air bubbles with the slurry, but not to generate cavitations in the slurry. This application can increase the dissolution speed of the air bubbles into the slurry.
