Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as an intermediate for preparation of pharmaceuticals, dyes, resin stabilizers, etc., in high selectivity and yield, by reacting a specific aromatic amine and a primary alcohol, etc. under heating, in the presence of a catalyst containing a transition metal oxide.
CONSTITUTION: The titled compound is prepared by reacting an aromatic amine containing at least one H atom (e.g. aniline, o-toluidine, etc.) with a primary alcohol or a secondary alcohol in the presence of a catalyst containing a transition metal oxide, under heating. The catalyst containing transition metal oxide is the one containing the oxide of a transition metal element of VI, VII or VIII group of the periodic table, as main component. Especially, the catalyst containing iron oxide, chromium oxide, etc. as main component, is preferable. The primary alcohol is e.g. methanol, ethanol, etc., and the secondary alcohol is e.g. isopropanol.
