Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce a sponge rubber molding with a desired variation in the thickness of the skin layer of a sponge core by vulcanizing and foaming only the surface layer of material in a semivulcanizing mold as a preliminary step and then, conducting the molding in the main mold after cooling.
CONSTITUTION: It is so arranged that vulcanization proceeds simultaneously with or preceding the foaming on the surface layer of an unvulcanized rubber composition containing a vulcanizing agent and a foaming agent with the size held smaller than the finish size of a molding. To achieve this, the kind and the quantity of the foaming agent is selected while the heating temperature and time are set properly. When the vulcanization progresses to form a skin layer 3 with a proper thickness in the composition, it is cooled with a cooling water passed through a semivulcanizing mold jacket. Finally, the rubber composition whose surface layer alone is vulcanized leaving the skin layer 3 left unvulcanized inside is transferred to the main mold from a semi-unvulcanizing mold and foamed and vulcanized simultaneously to form a sponge core 4 while a complete vulcanization proceeds with the skin layer pressed against the inner wall of a die under a gas pressure. A sponge rubber molding shaped as specified is produced.
