Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound economically, in an industrial scale, preventing the formation of monochloroacetylene, by contacting and dehydrochlorinating 1,1,2-trichloroethane with an aqueous solution of a caustic alkali containing an alkali halide.
CONSTITUTION: In the preparation of vinylidene chloride by the contact and dehydrochlorination reaction of 1,1,2-trichloroethane with an alkaline aqueous solution, an aqueous solution of caustic alkali containing an alkali halide is used as the alkaline aqueous solution (especially preferably, the liquid obtained by the electrolysis of NaCl solution by diaphragm process). The use of the diaphragm process electrolytic solution enables the suppression of the production of monochloroacetylene during the dehydrochlorination reaction, easy and economical refining of the NaCl-containing solution obtained by the dehydrochlorination of trichloroethane to the grade suitable for the electrolytic reaction, and the effective utilization of the NaCl produced by the dehydrochlorination reaction.
